Yes, there’s always shame in the offing if you stray too far from the role and image of true maleness, and that shaming comes from both sexes. It comes from both young and old, because it’s incorporated into the mentality of our culture so early. Growing up in a small Texas town I was introduced to anti intellectualism early. My parents moved me to a private school but it had its problems too. It’s very hard for a child to know what’s going on and why you feel like a perpetual outsider. Later, looking back, you realize that your artist’s nature can stir up a kind of instinctive, animal antagonism in your fellow humans.
