While learning the art of living in the light of death, I’ve come to understand that life AND death are part of the same coin. Death is my friend, a constant companion that serves as a wake-up call. “Pay attention,” it whispers. “This is your life. How shall you live it?”

— Richard Brendan

Human beings are not born once and for all
on the day their mothers give birth to them,
but life obliges them over and over again
to give birth to themselves.

— Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The question is very understandable, but no one has found a satisfactory answer to it so far. Yes, why do they make still more gigantic planes, still heavier bombs and, at the same time, prefabricated houses for reconstruction? Why should millions be spent daily on the war and yet there’s not a penny available for medical services, artists, or for poor people? …. Oh, why are people so crazy?

— Anne Frank

Why do we struggle so? Why do we exert ourselves so strenuously? What is the threat? Is it real or is it just something we imagine? Who, what, sets it off, this great struggle, this eternal conflict?
