What About the Sorcerers?

“I was in a dialogue with Trungpa once, in Vermont, and he said to me, “What do you do about sorcerers?” I said, “What sorcerers, Trungpa? I don’t see any sorcerers, and besides, I wouldn’t do anything about them, anyway. My guru takes care of me; that’s his business. I just love God.”

And Rinpoche replied, “You’re copping out.” He said, “These are critical times, Ram Dass, and we must assume responsibility.” I thought about that for a moment, and I decided that he must be putting me on, so I said to him, “All times are critical, Rinpoche, and God has all the responsibility.” He said, “No, you don’t understand. You must take responsibility.”

I’ve come to believe that Trungpa was right, in a certain way, and that I was copping out.
