Lucretia Borgia, Bartolomeo Veneto

She who is really happy is happy everywhere, in a palace or in a cottage, in riches or in poverty, for she has discovered the fountain of happiness which is situated in her own heart. As long as a person has not found that fountain, nothing will give them real happiness.

~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

More than machinery, we need humanity… More than intelligence, we need kindness and sweetness. Without these qualities life will be violent and everything will be lost.

I met Mercedes in Sucre, a town on the interior of the Caribbean coast …One day, at a student dance, and when she was only thirteen years old, I asked her to marry me. I think now that the proposal was a metaphor to jump above all the twists and turns I had to do back then to get a girlfriend. She would have understood it this way, because we kept seeing each other in a sporadic and always casual way, and I think we both knew without a doubt that sooner or later the metaphor was going to come true…Now we are about to be married twenty-five years, and we have never had a serious controversy. I think the secret is that we have continued to understand things as we understood them before we got married. That is, marriage, like our whole life, is a terribly difficult thing that we have to start over every day
