Projection means that some unconscious factor is unintentionally seen in the outer world whilst it actually belongs to our own unconscious. If the novice venerates his teacher like a God it simply means that he has not yet found that divine image in himself which he thinks to perceive in his teacher, and if (more normally) a man is hopelessly fascinated by a woman or a woman by a man, this generally turns out to be the projection of the man’s inner femininity (anima) or the woman’s masculinity (animus) onto an outer person.
