They Raise Your Children
*
It’s strange how something so small, so everyday, can feel like a spell breaking.
Because when you strip something of its being, reduce it to an it, a thing, a resource, you’re not just changing a word. You’re changing a relationship. You are defining the connection through the word used.
And in that case here, you’re flattening the sacred.
You’re making it mute.
And that’s what we did to the Earth.
We stopped calling Her She.
We stopped treating Her as kin, as consciousness, as Mother, as Mystery.
And in doing so, we made it easier to strip Her, to mine Her, to ignore Her cries.
I remember walking the hills (feminine in French) of Burgundy a few days ago, with my daughter on my back and the wind (masculine in French) caressing the fields, and it hit me like a visceral ache in my chest:
The Earth is not in crisis. We are.
She knows how to survive extinctions.
She’s done it before. She can do it again…
We forgot that we are nature.
We called it “it” (a She in French)
We forgot that the forests are our lungs.
