If by intellectual we understand someone who works with their head and not with their hands, then a bank employee would be an intellectual and Michelangelo wouldn’t be.
For me an intellectual is someone who produces new understandings by mobilizing their creativity.
A peasant who, with a visionary effort, imagines a new kind of graft capable of producing new fruits, is an authentic creator of knowledge.
A philosophy professor, no matter how erudite, who repeats, year after year, the same course on Heidegger, hasn’t earned the title.
The key difference? Creativity.
