In our culture we have failed in the transformation of the masculine spirit. We began with that powerful, creative spirit, and somewhere along the path it has been discarded, or most certainly disregarded. Now the unicorn, that wondrous masculine symbol, is sentimentalized into being a stuffed toy living in cutesy toy departments or filling the forest of aisles in stationery and card shops, and our culture is left with a marshmallow animal with a limp horn.

You need to be able to deal with EVIL in order to agree with it and give it the right place in life, because the pious illusion of eliminating it from yourself (or worse still from the world) is the first to own it, as well as an indication of psychological infantilism.

… That’s why many things have to be done scrupulously, like a ceremony: to counterbalance the evil that is threatening from the bottom.

— Jung

When the great Way is forgotten,

goodness and piety appear.

When the body’s intelligence declines,

cleverness and knowledge step forth.
