The purpose of a relationship is not to make you happy. It’s to make you conscious.

Eckhart Tolle

Realization is not acquisition of anything new nor is it a new faculty. It is only removal of all camouflage. — Sri Ramana Maharshi

Babajan called Me one day as I was cycling past Her tree, and She kissed Me on the forehead; and for nine months, God knows, I was in that state to which very, very few go, even in cycles of time. I had no consciousness of My body, or of anything else. I roamed about, taking no food. My mother thought I was mad, and called the doctor. My father understood, but said nothing. The doctors could not do anything.

I did not sleep, because I was unconscious; and then what happened is very rare. It is only for Avatars, who take on themselves the suffering of the world. I took no food but tea, which My elder brother Jamshed, who loved Me very much, gave Me.

Then I was drawn out to Sai Baba. It was an intense urge. Sai Baba directed Me to Upasni Maharaj. He picked up a stone and hit Me on the head. All at once, I felt calm; and I knew I was the Ancient One. Then seven years passed, and one day Maharaj folded His hands and said, “Merwan, you are the Avatar.”

I am now infinitely enjoying bliss and infinitely suffering at the same time. As soon as I drop My body, I will go to My abode of Infinite Bliss.”

Meher Baba

We are all struggling with our inability to see the world and our true relationship to it. Everything we are attracted to can teach us — art, love relationships, work — all of it is a mirror if we’re paying attention. The idea that we don’t know ourselves may seem strange, but we carry so many assumptions in our heads fogging our vision that we’re practically blind.

“Removal of all camouflage” is an arduous project. It’s possible to lose your bearings and never regain them again in that process, especially if you try to blast through via drugs. But living unconsciously divorced from reality, living routinely in a half slumber, is not fulfilling your human potential.

Our consciousness rides atop a very deep sea of powerful energies that, once unleashed, are hard to put back in the bottle. We don’t suspect their existence or how difficult it is to integrate them. We are shocked at their power. There is a reason for our routines and social constructs. It’s best to go slow, to look calmly and meditatively at how we have construed reality so that we can see not only its falseness but how we use it to protect us.

A sturdy self is indispensable in the search for truth. Contact with the roots of existence can blast us into a disoriented condition with no obvious exit.

And yet, the world has reached a point where we can’t remain closed-minded, hard-hearted humans. The survival of the planet requires us to evolve. Changing our beliefs for other better beliefs will only take us so far. A sufficient number of us will need to break through to a place of greater soul. Seeing as fact and not as belief that we are interconnected to all entities in the universe right down to the subatomic level, and that not caring for others is suicide — is the next unavoidable step on our path.

Most of us will resist this step. Most of us will prefer to carry on with how we were conditioned to think and feel. Change is uncomfortable, painful even. Change is upon us, though, like it or not.

A new human is being born.
