Stumbling In The Fires of Adversity
“My husband wouldn’t give me money for that purpose.”
“Then lie to him,” she said
“But Miss Hannah,” I said, aghast at her response,” that wouldn’t be honest.”
“My dear” she said, looking me straight in the eye, “we’re not talking about honesty. We’re talking about getting along with men.”

When I was seven, I said to my mother, may I close the door? And she said yes, but why do you want to close the door? And I said because I want to think. And when I was eleven, I said to my mother, may I lock my door? And she said, yes, but why do you want to lock your door? And I said, because I want to write.

I was born in Italy because my father was a soldier in the Ederle Barracks in Vicenza. Then I lived up to four years in Aviano, in the province of Pordenone. That’s why I named my daughter Aviana. Then we moved to Colorado, but I dreamed every night that I was still in Italy. Every time I go back I am struck by the amazing sense of hospitality and generosity of the people who open their doors and share their food!
