When my grandmother was dying, my brother and I went to the hospital to say goodbye. Now I was a grown woman in my selfish years.

Her large nose was a beak of a bird, and her eyes were frantic as she headed toward leaving the loose coat of skin over her frail bones. She took up less than 1/3rd of that hospital bed and her 4’ 11” frame had already begun disappearing..

Driving home yesterday, I couldn’t get home because there was a fatal accident just a few feet from my driveway, so my daughter, worried, called me and put me on a three-way FaceTime call with Mika, my granddaughter.

Most of my films deal with people who are stuck in certain routines and habits that don’t make them happy. They want to change, but they need something to push them. I think it’s mostly love that causes them to break their routines and move on.

~ Wong Kar-Wai
