A Class of Criminals
The great problem of our time is that we do not understand what is happening to the world. We are confronted with the darkness of our soul, the unconscious. Carl Jung
“Culture can only function if we live out the unwanted elements symbolically. All healthy societies have a rich ceremonial life. Less healthy societies rely on unconscious expressions: war, violence… Ceremony and ritual are a far more intelligent means of accomplishing the same thing.” — Robert Johnson
If we live only on the surface of ourselves, we are lost in conflicts and narrow self interest. A culture built on ego interests will self-destruct. Our American culture is relatively new, but built on the fault lines of slavery and genocide. Money is God. Religion is divested of ceremony, ritual and beauty. Our built environment reflects our poverty of soul. Kindness, clarity, love and strength are in short supply. An astonishing number of Americans are armed to the teeth and full of fear and random aggression.
Can such a society endure? We find ourselves at the moment right on the cusp of full blown fascism. A good forty percent of the populace seems to be descending into a suicidal delirium. All the guardrails are breaking. Democrats are hoping the indifferent masses will wake up long enough to vote. The lack of civic education in America has created a class of people who must concentrate all their energies on surviving another day, with no time or inclination to think about what kind of person represents them in the halls of power.
A class of criminals has usurped the reins of governance and they are close to closing the deal on permanent dominance of the American system. Following that will be a christofascist regime that will make today’s dramas seem like a golden age. The Republican party has become the locomotive pulling this train of plunderers.
Voting is almost the only voice we have left to change this trajectory and that has become corrupted by unreliable voting machines and blatant vote suppression. Mail-in voting is probably the most reliable method we have, which worries anyone who wants to cheat. It’s easy to hack voting machines, but vote suppression is a lot harder with hand written mail-in ballots, unless of course if you just throw them away. Naturally Trump and his followers want to “get rid of the ballots.” How else could they win?
It comes down to the character of America. Do we still have the gumption to recognize evil when we see it? Are enough of us free from hateful delusion to care about our country and justice for all? Is there enough educated goodwill to pull us through this perilous time?
I wish I knew that the answer to these questions was “yes, of course,” but I admit I’m biting my fingernails.
