Part of The Whole
THIS DAY
It is possible this day to perceive our lives as small and powerless; or it is possible to perceive our lives as personal stages upon which the entire cosmic drama is being played out.
It is possible this day to perceive ourselves as isolated individuals lost in a storm of cruelty; or, it is possible to perceive ourselves as cells vital to the healing of the common body.
It is possible this day to perceive ourselves as detached individuals born into a time of meaningless cruelty and ignorance; or, it is possible to perceive ourselves as members of a noble band who, from our species’ birth, have been marching toward a better future one inch at a time.
It is possible this day to live timidly, fearfully clutching onto whatever is left of our life; or, it is possible to empty ourselves fearlessly into this day as radiant manifestations of what it can mean to be fully human.

In ancient China, the Taoists taught that a constant inner smile, a smile to oneself, insured health, happiness and longevity. Why? Smiling to yourself is like basking in love: you become your own best friend. Living with an inner smile is to live in harmony with yourself.
