Annie Ovenden — Murmation over Lanhydrock Park

In the very end, civilizations perish because they listen to their politicians and not to their poets.

There are churches waiting for the second coming with bated breath. They have little charts to help interpret modern events in light of ancient prophecies. In my lifetime there have been many supposed Antichrists (Gorbachov, Obama, the United Nations, etc.) There have been many supposed signs that “these are the last days.” So far ALL of them have been wrong.

If a method of biblical interpretation has been consistently wrong for 2000 years doesn’t it make sense to try something different?

There is only one way to read, which is to frequent libraries and bookstores, take books that draw your attention, reading only those, throwing them aside when they bore you, skipping the heavy parts and never, absolutely never, read something by a sense of duty or because it is part of a fashion or of a movement. Remember that the book that bores you when you’re twenty or thirty, will open your perspectives when you’re in your forties or fifties, or vice versa. Don’t read a book that isn’t the right time for you…
