Learn To Breathe

From MacDonald F. Frederick

“By now you may have come to realize this book is alive. Treat it with respect so that it will come to respect you. Be aware that whatever you think about it is far less important than what it feels about you. Take care because this is your future…”

That, to me, is what the process of writing — and reading — is all about.

…Out of the first four or five people who got to see it, I think three of them wept the whole time they were reading it: that was its initial effect as it came into the world of humans. Then one person — she used to be a professional singer but gave it up many years ago — was suddenly shocked to find herself singing again as soon as she started to read it.

That’s really what it’s about: to be touched on a deeper level….

Empedocles says right at the start of his teaching about the cosmos and about the elements of existence, about biology, about astronomy, about everything, that people will never understand anything about any of these subjects or ever be able to approach them rightly unless they first learn to breathe in the right way…unless they cultivate a reverence for the divine in everything.

We still have his instructions and warnings from over two thousand years ago…

… it became painfully obvious to me just how far out of their way all the people I knew or met
