I’ve only learned one foreign language well (French), but that was before the internet existed. Like you, classroom work had disappointing results for me. I only know, therefore, how to learn a language by living with a native speaker romantic partner. That system works if the native speaker is patient and interesting to talk to. I recommend it because you have a model constantly before you. Living in the country is also irreplaceable.

Sometimes I think I’m trying to learn the mindset of the culture as it is expressed by its language, which gives the flavor of the language its meaning and soul. The mechanics of a language alone has limited appeal for me.

Now that I’m in Mexico, it’s time to learn Spanish. Your recommendations will come in very handy since I can’t use the flesh and blood method anymore.

Gracias et merci.
