I read The Glass Bead Game when I was too young to understand it, but I vaguely remember a theme of aesthetics and philosophy wedded to the deeper meaning of life, which became the theme of my life. Interesting that you should bring that up. I was twenty-two when I read it; I was no doubt encouraged to read it by older friends. Hesse died that year, 1962, so we were reading all his works.
