I learned French in my thirties because one kind person was willing to encourage me, after so many others had dismissed my efforts as useless. It takes persistence to overcome discouragement from people who are themselves monolingual. Americans don’t usually understand how difficult it is, especially as an adult, to learn a foreign language.
