I grew up in Texas and spent forty years in France. I never ran into the problem of being too loud, too friendly or too forward with the French because I’m an introvert, but I saw a lot of Americans with big sprawling bodies and loud voices become unwelcome objects of attention. That hyena laugh that marks American women is especially unwelcome in France, and I assume in all of the Old World.
