I grew up in Austin, (born in Cleburne), and now live in San Miguel, after forty years in France and Italy. I haven’t identified with things Texan in a long time, and when I visit I think I’m in Disneyland. It’s both familiar (vaguely), and strange. It was always conservative, and I always felt like an outsider, but what’s happening now is frightening. We can only keep our fingers crossed that the whole U.S. doesn’t descend into full fascism.
