All these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, understood that Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed. ~ Terence McKenna

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Derek Walcott

Enlightenment is a destructive process. It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier. Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth. It’s seeing through the facade of pretense. It’s the complete eradication of everything we imagined to be true.

The gods sometimes make masterpieces and she was living proof. I knew the moment I saw her she was a superior woman. She was a superior human being. I was not one of those; I knew she was a bit out of my league but, given an opening, I took it. It felt like the big leap of courage McKenna talks about. I dreamed the impossible dream and acted on it.

Integrity, intelligence, beauty, creativity, courage were written all over her. She was, and still is, unexpectedly modest. I might even say unnecessarily modest. I became a better person over the years from living in close quarters with her energies. I think I knew how much I needed to grow into an improved version of myself. Who you marry makes you either better or worse. I got lucky.

The fates approved. My life became full of beauty and adventure. The forces of destiny decided to favor us with soul gratifying creative projects, which continue even now. After a few years of confusion and disorientation when we lost everything and had to leave France, we just put our heads down and did what we had to do to survive together. I think we got a perspective we needed to have during those years. That perspective enhances our life now. Who we thought we were and what we thought we wanted has shifted to embrace a very different life the world presents us with now.

We are much better positioned to live in what the world is becoming now, a world we never saw coming. Someone up there was looking out for us.

Amazing how these things happen.

Now, the sun has come out again and we find ourselves in a life we never expected or planned for that is exquisitely attuned to who we are, simple but full of beauty and creativity.

How does this happen? How does one become true? I think we are born with a kind of soul acorn that can only grow into a flowering of its essential self or else die. If you get off your path, if you try to be other than what you essentially are, you lose your life. You stay a small ersatz person. The adventure of your life has to happen on the soul level or not at all.

Courage, facing fears, even being wildly impractical helps this process of soul development along.

Staying safe is the most dangerous thing you can do.
