Nicolas Roerich, Buried Treasures

Many years ago, I reached an important turning point in my journey when I came to the realization there are two stories that make up my life. The first story is the one I commonly tell myself and other people about who I am. The second story seemed to develop by itself, even though it came out of my experience.

The first story I worked hard to develop as I grew into adulthood and found a place in the grown-up world. The second story is the one Dr. Jung discusses in his autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (p. 117). This story is often hidden from our everyday awareness; thus, Dr. Jung calls it a “secret story,” one that he considers to be like a ‘rock’ that often blocks or ‘shatters’ our lives. This buried and frequently denied story is about our deeper inner experiences of pain, loss, love, expectations, loneliness, and terror. It may also be about the resilience, the potential, or the heroism within ourselves than we fear to recognize. Make no mistake about it. Every life has such a hidden story.

I don’t go into the studio with the idea of ‘saying’ something. What I do is face the blank canvas and put a few arbitrary marks on it that start me on some sort of dialogue.
