Four weeks after meeting a French girl I wanted to talk to—who didn’t speak English—I was pretty fluent. Ten years later I was almost a native speaker (so the tests said), but it was 24 hours a day with a dictionary always close by. Reading is ok now but writing lags far behind. Spelling in French is even hard for the French. I prefer to start by speaking, though. That’s where most people get stuck.
