The Italian political philosopher Antonio Gramsci is quoted as saying, “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters.”

…It is incomprehensible to me that any human being would put razor wire in a river to lacerate refugees fleeing the poverty and political instability inflicted in part by our own foreign policies. What kind of nation withholds water from construction workers or turns its libraries into discipline centers? What has given birth to these monsters?

… America is dying as a global empire, but that death will allow us to return to the quest for a world where every person can have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

‘Family’

‘As it is known in South Africa and in Native America, your family is your complete village, with all its living and its dead.

And your kinship doesn’t end in humans.

Your family also speaks to you in the crack of fire,

at the rumor of running water,

in the breath of the forest,

in the voices of the wind,

in the rage of thunder,

in the rain that kisses you
