Expats come in all sizes shapes and colors. I spent 35 years out of the US, mostly in France but also Italy and Mexico, and my thinking mutated unconsciously. When I returned to Texas, I passed for native without problem, but unbeknownst to fellow Americans I was translating and struggling to remember customs and Americanisms. And I longed to speak in foreign tongues, which has almost become verboten in the land of the free. Fitting in looks unlikely, nor do I wish to.
