Jia Wei, The New Human

About twenty years ago — I was already quadragenary and I was immersed in a crisis that I would not dare call existential for fear of a word so grave — I wrote a poem in which these verses read: “he who is silent as I have kept silent / will not be able to die” without having said it all.” The threat was clear and I moved on to the facts; after that, I published seventeen books. The answer I would like to give as to why I write is very simple: because I remained mute for a long time. Nothing else. As for the hope of being able to say it all, I’ve been slowly losing it in every book, and I’ve finally understood that this ambition, besides being humanly impossible, is also socially undesirable. I’m just saying what I can.

Perhaps the history of man is a very long movement that leads us to humanization. Perhaps we are nothing but hypothesis of humanity and perhaps we can reach a day, and this is the maximum utopia, that human beings respect human beings.

Lovers of humankind seek to liberate us not to make us obedient to religious hierarchy.

The living heart of religion is not an institution, it is a revolution.
