Can we pause for a second to appreciate how strange and amazing it is to be alive in a temporary body inhabiting a floating rock spinning through space in perfect celestial precision? Our worries and insecurities seem pretty insignificant compared to the mystery and miracle of it all.

To quote Ricky Gervais, “God gave you free will so that you have the choice to either worship him or go to hell.” Every time I post the Gervais quote on an evangelical site, it gets a lot of likes and “amens.” To the best of my knowledge, and with more than 40 years of observing them up close and personal, irony is a baffling foreign concept (and thus satanic) to bible thumpers.

Down valley a smoke haze

Three days heat, after five days rain

Pitch glows on the fir-cones

Across rocks and meadows

Swarms of new flies.

I cannot remember things I once read

A few friends, but they are in cities.

Drinking cold snow-water from a tin cup

Looking down for miles
