A woman came for the seventh time to the Father in the church to confess a sin. Even the Father was a little surprised because it was the same sin again and again — that she had made love to a man to whom she was not married.

So the father said, “Have you committed the sin seven times or only once?

She said, “Only once.”

So he said, “Then why do you go on confessing it? You already confessed seven times.”

She said, “I Love to talk about it. It’s so beautiful just to think about it.”

“It has always seemed strange to me,” said Doc. “The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success.”

When my granddaughter was two years old — not even that verbal, she went into the living room one day to her stack of beloved books, with a mission, and began separating them into two piles.

When she was finished, I pointed to the larger pile and said, oh, is this the pile of books you like?
