Be Kind, Just Be Kind
… the Elders have been saying for some time that as the Changes progressed we would begin to see more and more mental health issues. I suppose it makes sense….
I have been making offerings to the herd animals, the deer, the buffalo, the reindeer, the caribou, the antelope, to ask if they would share with me what they know about staying free and clear and glad even as predators inevitably take members of their herd, their family, away, every day. I am still listening for their response, but I think that I have adopted some of their way. I understand that things are breaking down, as they must. I have heard what the elders have said about maintaining my heart and spiritual life…. I have to pace myself. Do antelope have to pace themselves? Do some peoples have more grief and despair to spare than I?
Still, somewhere inside of myself, I dream of another time, a time where I can live my birthright of despair, I dream of the time when we can all live our birthright of unabashed grief, at the tender drop of a hat.
