Americans are deprived of roots. Born in Texas, it took me almost forty years to establish roots in France, but those roots were ripped out. That's a different feeling from just not having anything except inculcated American misconceptions about yourself and your culture. Choosing your culture is a privilege denied to most people. I always wonder at friends who can't quite detach themselves from America, although there are things about it I love--music, literature, for example.

But making a nationality of one's own is the intelligent path, I think. And being a hybrid is a larger way of being. May you find your way in your search.
