A Rite of Passage
Covid turned the world upside down. And we were all thrown into a liminal space. We all started having an intiatory encounter. We all started going through an ordeal. And it has been like a ‘’Collective Rite of Passage…
And it is not unlike what Joseph Campbell describes in how an ‘ínitiate’ is put through a series of ordeals, a crisis of meaning, a deconstruction of the old identity, and a confrontation with mortality. And we have all had to confront our own mortality. Can you remember what it was like at the beginning of Covid? When you didn’t know whether you were taking your own life into your hands just going down the street to get something to eat.
And it certainly got our attention, the Covid Virus. And we could see this time as a Collective Rite of Passage or as a kind of a Death and Rebirth mystery. And there has been the sense that something old is dying. And we have been thrown back on ourselves. And on to our own soul. And one of the first things is that we have to love our own soul. And we have to put our ear down close to the soul and listen hard…
